Iota Phi Theta Fraternity

Celebrating Brotherhood, Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity
Founded on September 19, 1963, at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. stands as a shining emblem of principled brotherhood and dedicated service. What began as a beacon of strength among twelve determined men during the turbulent Civil Rights era has flourished into one of the most respected and socially engaged organizations within the Divine Nine.
Our Founding
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity was established by The Twelve Illustrious Founders—visionaries committed to uplifting their communities and resisting societal injustices. Their values of scholarship, leadership, and civic responsibility form the bedrock of the fraternity’s mission to this day. Born amid political unrest, the fraternity’s founding ethos was revolutionary: to foster brotherhood through intellect, action, and a profound sense of cultural pride.
Mission & Vision
The mission of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity is simple yet powerful: to develop and perpetuate scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, and brotherhood among men—particularly men of color—while actively participating in service initiatives that foster community transformation.
Our vision extends far beyond campus life. We strive to shape leaders for every sphere of society—individuals who represent courage, authenticity, and excellence in all they do.
National Presence, Local Impact
From its humble beginnings at Morgan State University, Iota Phi Theta Faternity has grown into an international brotherhood with over 300 chapters across the United States and abroad. Our members—known affectionately as "Iotas"—can be found in nearly every field: from government to education, finance to the arts, and public health to public service.
Through grassroots initiatives, national programs, and partnerships with civic and charitable organizations, Iotas lead from the front. Projects like Stomp Out Hunger, I-S.H.I.E.L.D., and The I.O.T.A. Youth Alliance are just a few examples of how the fraternity commits to social progress and education.
Brotherhood with Purpose
At the core of our fraternity is brotherhood—a commitment to lifelong support, mentorship, and shared vision. Membership in Iota Phi Theta means joining a legacy of empowerment and accountability. Our bond is built not only through rituals and traditions, but also through the shared experiences of challenge, triumph, and unwavering unity.
